If we failed to land a "probe" 3 times on Mars how the hell did we get the Mars Rover to land?

There is growing pessimism that a European probe which attempted to land on Mars on Wednesday has been lost.

Tracking of the Schiaparelli robot's radio signals was dropped less than a minute before it was expected to touch down on the Red Planet's surface.

So that is now Russia, USA and Europe who have failed to land tiny probes on Mars so how did they land a massive thing like the Rover there?

Maybe I am missing something? I'd love to know if I'm wrong as I haven't got a clue about science and space please comment below and let me know if I'm wrong or right.
